Rishikesh- What is Rishikesh famous for?




Rishikesh is in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand state in India. The total population of Rishikesh is 75,020 as of 2001. Rishikesh is situated at 409 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalaya range and surrounded by the Shivalik range. 

Rishikesh is known as the gateway of Char Dham. Char Dham is four popular holy temples on the hills(Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri). Thousands of devotees are attracted every year to Rishikesh for spiritual relief, peace, learn yoga, adventure and take a dip for salvation. The famous among them were the Beatles, Kate Winslet, and many more celebrities. It is believed that by meditation in Rishikesh, one can get " Moksha "(liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth) as well as a holy dip in the river Ganges.

Rishikesh is a vegetarian and alcohol-free city.

Rishikesh was part of the legendary "Kedarkhand" mentioned in the Skanda Purana. Legends state that Rama did penance here for killing Ravana, the asura king of Lanka. Lakshmana Rama's younger brother cross the Ganges using two jute ropes at a point where the present Lakshmana Jhula suspension Bridge stands today.

Lakshman Jhula also collapsed in 2020 and a much stronger second in the whole of India a glass bridge, being built across the river.  A noted suspension bridge named Ram Jhula was built in 1986 nearby Sivananda Nagar. The Skanda Purana also mentions the site as "Indrakund" where Indra underwent a holy bath to remove a curse.

The Ganges, one of the most sacred rivers to Hindus, flows through Rishikesh in its course from the Shivalik Hills of the Himalayas to the plains of Northern India with temples built along the banks of Shatrughan Mandir, Bharat Mandir, and Lakshman mandir are the ancient temples established by Adi Shankaracharya. Shatrughan Temple is near the Ram Juhla suspension bridge, While Lakshman Mandir is situated near the Lakshman Jhula suspension Bridge. 



Yoga Capital

Rishikesh is the birthplace of Yoga. Since ancient times the location has served as a heaven for Yogis, saints, and practitioners who came there to learn about these traditional Indian practices, advance their understanding of them, become instructors, or even find enlightenment.

Ganga Arti

The Ganga Arti is performed at dusk at the Triveni Ghat. The popular Hindu religious rituals involve playing music and providing religious offerings to the fire. 

Rishikesh offers many rafting along the Ganges from grades I-IV. Rishikesh has the highest bungee jumping at 83 mt over a rocky cliff. The longest flying fox in Asia is in Rishikesh with a length of 1 km and speed of 140 km per hour.

The Rishikesh and the Yog Nagri Rishikesh railway stations offer service to this city, partially through Indian railways.

Road

Rishikesh is connected with the state capital Dehradun which is 12 km from the city,  Private and shared Taxi services travel between Rishikesh and most major North Indian cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla.

Air

The nearest airports are Dehradun Airport(15km) and New Delhi International Airport (240 km).
